Across
the Frontier

It is a
privilege
enjoyed by
few to be
able to
trace one's
family back
over 350
years to its
beginnings
in America.
Even fewer
can trace
their
ancestral
line to the
Middle Ages.
We are
fortunate
that others
have left a
comparatively
easy path to
follow back
to England
and the 13th
century.
The three
and one-half
centuries of
American
history
following
the settling
of Jamestown
is
essentially
a history of
the movement
of people
from the
Atlantic
coast inland
then across
one frontier
after
another.
And that is
the history
of the Cole
family in
America as
they moved
inland in
Virginia
then across
the frontier
to Georgia,
Alabama,
Mississippi,
and Texas.
As the
Indians were
subdued in
one area
after
another and
forced ever
west ward,
new
frontiers
were opened.
The promise
of cheap,
fertile land
drew the
Coles along
with many
other
adventuresome
pioneers
over sketchy
and unmarked
trails to
areas
scarcely
vacated by
Indians and
herds of
buffalo.
The land was
filled with
uncertainty,
hardships,
marauding
outlaws, and
threats of
Indian
attacks.
But, this
didn't deter
the pioneers
hardy enough
to move
across the
frontier.
