CHAPTER 1
Virginia
On May 13,
1607, 104
Englishmen
ended a
voyage that
had started
on the
Thames River
at London on
December 20,
1606 and
began the
first
permanent
English
settlement
in North
America.
It was
springtime
in Virginia
and the
dogwood, redbud, green
meadows, and
forested
shores were
a welcome
change from
the three
tiny ships,
the "Susan
Constant",
the "Godspeed",
and
the "Discovery"
which had
been home
for so long.
The
colonists
chose the
North side
of the James
River as the
site of
their new
home and
Jamestown as
its name.
Just eleven
short years
later in
1618,
